Why Is it Important to Have a Personal Vision Statement?

Most people who don’t have a personal vision statement are likely to be aimless in life. They are among those who do not have definite plans and goals for the future and are also without a focused and long term direction for their lives. If you are among those who do not have a clearly defined direction, you are likely to get caught up in outcomes of a short term nature such as shopping, watching TV, paying the bills, and just passing through the everyday motions, while making small attempts to survive the rat race in general. Without a personal vision statement, you will be inundated with a dull and worried existence rather than designing your own destiny and truly living it.

In life, success hardly occurs by chance, rather it occurs by design. When you do not have a plan for your own future, you will then fall into another person’s plan.

A personal vision statement is like a compass that guides you towards arriving at a destination in life that you have set for yourself. It makes sure that you remain focused on your laid out plans and keeps you on track to achieve your goals, so that you will not deviate from the path you have set for yourself. It serves as a beacon and a guiding light to help guide you through the inevitable rocky territories and storms you will encounter on your journey.

American author and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau once said: “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them.”

A personal vision statement has the following benefits and advantages:

  • It will make it easier for you to develop the strategies, milestones and objectives that will enable you to fulfill your vision.
  • It allows you to make an assessment of your values. For example, if integrity is one of your values, you will understand that you will be compromising the fulfillment of your vision if you are behaving in an unscrupulous manner.
  • It acts as a yard stick against which you can measure your progress towards your goals, and also assess your state of affairs.

You need to understand that your personal vision statement is a glimpse into the future. It defines who and what you want to become at a given time in the future. It should be clearly stated or else you may not be able to design a strategy to fulfill it.

Your personal vision statement usually emanates from your personal beliefs and value system. Values are qualities which are considered to be useful and sensible; they are a representation of your strongly held driving forces, as well as your greatest priorities in life.

A person is usually devoted to his or her own values and for this reason, it is vital to create your personal vision statement from the bedrock of your values.
